My goal as an educator is to constantly improve my knowledge in my field of research, in order to transmit accurate and up-to-date information to my students. To me, teaching and learning are two complementary practices, which contribute equally to the development of an academic career. Therefore, I spend a considerable amount of time studying new materials to keep myself at the peak of the latest trends in new media technologies. The outcome of this effort has a constant impact on the expansion of innovative thinking in my classes.
I try to motivate my students and create an appropriate learning environment for them by adopting a variety of teaching strategies inside and outside of the classroom. Since my goal is to advance students at both conceptual and technical levels, I plan my class hours accordingly by dividing my discussions into critical and technical debates. During the first few sessions of the semester, emphasis is put on theory, and for the most part I analyze the major philosophical schemes concerning the aesthetics of new media and their sociological impact. After this introductory phase, I start explaining the use of the software. In each class, students are encouraged to read two different textbooks throughout the semester. One is to enhance their critical judgment, and the other is to help improve their technical skills. Each student has to prepare a presentation on a specific topic. The idea is for them to perform an external research and to bring personal and new opinions into their speeches. They are regularly asked to turn in a 100-word essay about a chosen subject from their theoretical book. In parallel, they are required to complete two practical projects; one of them being an artistic work, and the other a commercial realization, both of which, I closely follow to completion. We carry out recurrent class critiques over every step of everyone's work during which, students are encouraged to express their sincere opinions about each other's projects.
