Orientation: Fine Arts
Specialty: Digital Arts/Virtual Reality
Highest honors: rare "honor of distinction with felicitations"
Dissertation: "Art and Psychic Distance in the Era of Virtual Reality: Theoretical Research and Interactive 3D Realization for an Immersive Digital Environment"
Dissertation Advisor: Edmond Couchot
The doctoral dissertation is multi-disciplinary and embraces two grounds: an installation of interactive 3D animation for a virtual reality system and a 300-page research paper. The art installation is a Virtual Reality experience that requires the participant to dress in a head mounted display and a data suit. At that time, one interacts with animated larger than life hands, which caress and enfold the user. Where the hands touch the suit, warmth or coolness is experienced. The written dissertation presents and debates the theory that immersive, virtual environments eliminate the psychic space between artwork and art-viewer.
